The QWERTY keyboard was designed to slow down a typist. While touch typing, when the fingers are on home row and you move your fingers upward, the top row is misaligned. When the fingers are on home row and you move your fingers downward, the fingers end up between the keys on the bottom row. The staggered nature of the rows of keys on typewriters and computer keyboards is unergonomic and makes visual mnemonic memorization of the QWERTY keyboard arrangement difficult. An "ortho-linear" keyboard also known as a "matrix" or "grid" keyboard and the vowel keyboard solves these problems.
